OXFORD CONSERVATION CONSORTIUM: A WORK OF MANY HANDS

To celebrate Head Conservator Jane Eagan’s retirement from OCC, she chose an afternoon printing session with her team at the Bodleian Library’s Bibliography Room. Jane selected a favourite photo, a composite image showing Grove Cottage before it was refurbished and extended for the Consortium in 2000, as a reminder of her time at OCC.

The Press Superintendent, Richard Lawrence, orchestrated the session, the photo was transferred onto a large piece of lino then divided into eight — each team member cut their section of lino, with Chantry Librarian, Marjory, setting the type.

Quiet concentration as the team gets linocutting (from left: Jasdip, Maria, Emma, Jane, Katerina, Jess, Nikki, Celia).

A work of four hands, Marjory and Richard setting type.

The individual squares of lino were joined together on the press to form a single mosaic image. The final effect shows the hand of each team member and our combined creativity shines through. The sum is definitely greater than the parts!

Jane inks up the linocut for the first proof.

Job done!

It was a fantastic afternoon, a great way to mark 27 years at OCC and 19 years at the helm, as Jane starts to say goodbye to a wonderful team, workplace, college colleagues and collections.

Watch this space! Final image to be shared at the end of July!
